The banker who prosecutors say helped Alex Murdaugh move millions of dollars around to avoid detection of his thefts in exchange for a share of the money has had his conviction and seven-year prison sentence overturned on appeal.

A federal court has reversed the conviction of Alex Murdaugh’s alleged fraud accomplice Russell Laffitte, according to court records. On Thursday, a panel of judges in the US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a 37-page unanimous ruling overturning Laffitte's conviction.

A federal appeals court has thrown out the convictions and prison sentence of former Hampton banker Russell Laffitte, citing judicial errors during his 2022 trial over allegations that he conspired with disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh to steal from vulnerable clients.

Russell Laffitte had been serving a seven-year sentence after being convicted on six counts of bank fraud. His conviction was thrown out on appeal.

The removal of a juror during jury deliberations at his bank fraud trail violated Hampton County banker Russell Laffitte’s right to an impartial jury, a 4th Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled.

Russell Laffitte has maintained he is innocent of helping ex-attorney Alex Murdaugh steal millions of dollars from his law clients.

A former Hampton banker and previously convicted Alex Murdaugh fraud accomplice will get another day in court. On Thursday, a federal appeals court vacated former Palmetto State Bank CEO Russell Lucius Laffitte's 2022 conviction.
