Alex Lyon rose to top the goaltending chart last season with the Detroit Red Wings, but enters Year 2 with the franchise having to prove himself again.

DETROIT – Alex Lyon entered last season knowing he was the Detroit Red Wings’ third-string goaltender, someone who might even have been waived with the purpose of being sent to AHL Grand Rapids.

Alex Lyon, Ville Husso and Cam Talbot, who was signed as a free agent on July 1, are locked in a battle for Wings goaltending duties.

The Detroit Red Wings goaltending competition is making it difficult for coach Derek Lalonde in a positive way. With three games left in the preseason, the race is still undecided because the three top goalies are all playing well enough to be considered for the starting job.
